Why GitHub
Decap CMS writes changes as Git commits. Netlify Identity and Git Gateway use GitHub as the repository backend. Deploy hosts read from GitHub. Pushing the project is the first step before any of that.
Create a repository
- Sign in to GitHub.
- Click New repository.
- Name it, for example
void-theme. - Choose Private if the theme is not public.
- Do not initialize with a README. The project already has files.
- Create the repository.
Initialize Git in the project
If the project is not a Git repository yet:
git init
git add .
git commit -m "Initial commit"
Connect the remote
Copy the repository URL from GitHub, then:
git remote add origin https://github.com/<username>/<repo>.git
git branch -M main
git push -u origin main
Refresh the GitHub page. The files should be there.
Check what is ignored
The project ignores node_modules, .svelte-kit, and build output. That is correct. Do not commit those.
